To increase water safety, a research team at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has developed a 3D print quality sensor device that monitors drinking water. This small device can be used in any part of the water distribution system, can run continuously and provide real-time feedback. Current water testing methods rely on manual testing and cannot be performed as frequently as automated test systems, and can only be done on a regular basis. The 3D printing water test equipment developed by UBC researchers can overcome the above challenges. Because they are 3D printed, people can make them quickly and at low cost, as well as repair or replace them.
This sensor-equipped device is wirelessly operated to read water samples regardless of temperature or water pressure. They work independently, and even if one of the devices goes wrong, the water test system can continue to operate.
“This highly portable sensor system continuously measures multiple water quality parameters such as turbidity, pH, conductivity, temperature and residual chlorine and wirelessly transmits data to a central system. This is a unique and effective technology. The water industry can be completely changed,†the researchers explained. “Although most water-related diseases occur in low- and middle-income countries, developed countries cannot completely avoid them. Unlike current water testing, which is “upstream†in water distribution systems, these 3D printing devices can be deployed almost anywhere, even at home. This provides additional water safety, allowing consumers to detect any contaminated or unsafe water early.
