The town hall Shenmu, Wang Shizhen Memorial Hall, Dai Jialin Treasure Hall, and exquisitely carved beds... These new cultural spaces are becoming the sharing and experience of Shenzhen citizens. Shenzhen Redwood Furniture Museum, adjacent to Shenzhen Guanlan Print Village, is a modern blue-gray building with floor-to-ceiling windows and walls that reveal a simple and stylish atmosphere. The large square in front of the building makes it spacious. This is the only officially recognized museum in Hong Kong with the theme of mahogany.

There are tens of thousands of mahogany boutiques. People can not only see the furniture from ancient times to the present, the classic style of modern furniture, the detailed analysis of mahogany furniture parts, the exquisite mahogany furniture making process, but also the unique mahogany in China. The treasures of furniture, the largest Burmese rosewood raw materials, and the oriental culture that is closely related to life, such as calligraphy and painting and Zen.

The most unexpected thing is that the museum's organizer is just a young woman with deep feelings for mahogany. She is called Wang Wenman.

Lasted eight years

Preparing to build a museum is only for dreams

Wang Wenman is a manager of the mahogany industry and is currently the vice president of the Chinese redwood leader, Xiangli Group. In the long-term management of mahogany, Wang Wenman discovered that the public does not understand the mahogany furniture.

“Many people in China are attracted by mahogany. Everyone’s impression of mahogany furniture is expensive. However, as the master of Chinese furniture, mahogany furniture is the most representative of Chinese furniture and the peak of world furniture. The traditional cultural connotation is very rich, and its craftsmanship is beyond the reach of other furniture in the world. Many national museums in the world collect Chinese mahogany furniture and pay as a culture. If we only regard it as a piece Very expensive furniture, I feel very sorry, this completely ignores the cultural value it has." Wang Wenman said.

To this end, building a mahogany furniture museum and opening this cultural treasure for the people became the dream of Wang Wenman.

In 2007, she proposed to the Xiangli Group to build a museum and persuaded the top decision-makers to obtain the support of Chairman Dai Jialin. Therefore, from the site selection to the establishment of the museum, to the perfect collection, Wang Wenman struggled for a long eight years. On May 8, 2014, the Shenzhen Redwood Furniture Museum opened and served as the Shenzhen Cultural Fair sub-meeting venue to meet the public.

During the eight years of the museum, Wang Wenman’s biggest difficulty was how to plan, collect and arrange the museum’s exhibits. To this end, she traveled all over the country and extensively sought the opinions of experts in mahogany furniture. After a long period of discussion and consideration, the interior of the museum has taken shape. The first floor mainly displays the furniture of the dynasties, so that when people come in, they can intuitively understand the changes in the shape of furniture in China from ancient times to the present. On the second and third floors, the mahogany boutiques are displayed. In the form of real-life models, the public can feel the home effect of the furniture, and can directly touch and try the furniture to experience the comfort of the mahogany home space. This mode of operation is consistently optimistic by domestic experts. The 4th and 5th floors are the mahogany furniture R&D center, the designer club and the Guangdong Traditional Culture Industry Training Center, which are currently under planning.

Later, the museum has successively opened a unique "three treasures and ten scenes". Such as Wang Shizhen Memorial Hall, Handicraft Square, Chairman of the Cheung Lee Group, Life Collection, Treasure House, New Product Launch, Wendeng Book Garden, Zen Environment, Wannian Root Carving, etc. Through the excavation of various details, the mahogany culture and Chinese home culture are vividly displayed.

Wang Wenman’s dedication to the museum and her unremitting efforts for her dreams have become the shining quality of Xiangli’s corporate culture.

Every collection has an extraordinary origin. There are countless museums, but each one has a story.

For example, the town hall Shenmu, one of the museum's three treasures, is a 5-storey Burmese rosewood (Dalian rosewood) raw material, which is the largest Burmese rosewood material discovered in Asia so far. In fact, its whole tree is much higher than what it is now, but it has to be cut off due to transportation problems. The current town hall Shenmu is one of the main sections.

The Wang Shizhen Memorial Hall has the most history. This may be the only memorial hall in the country that has the "authentic" furniture of Wang Shizhen Ming style furniture. Wang Shizhen is the master of Chinese classical mahogany furniture industry. Because of his writing and publishing of "Four Style Furniture 16", Ming style furniture has been recognized by the world and formed the cultural concept of Ming style furniture. Wang Shizhen himself has come to Xiangli Group many times and has deep friendship and exchanges with Xiangli Group. In order to commemorate Wang Shizhen, the museum has specially set up a memorial hall of more than 200 square meters, which shows the "16-piece Ming furniture" recommended by Wang Shizhen's life. It uses the real mahogany to make the same furniture and environment as the original size. .

Interesting stories, even corners. At the end of the furniture exhibition area of the dynasty in the first floor, it is a part exhibition of ancient Chinese furniture. It is divided into more than 10 meters according to the legs, feet and waist. This gallery was “grabbed back” from the fair. At that time, a cultural company in Beijing exhibited these exhibits. Wang Wenman was very excited after seeing it, because this is perhaps the most comprehensive piece of furniture, and each piece was removed from the old furniture! She immediately decided to buy it all at all costs and put it in the museum. But the company is not willing to transfer because they only have one. After many rushing persuasion, Wang Wenman still moved this "furniture component pavilion" back.

Dreams are on the way

In the trek of promoting the mahogany culture, Wang Wenman’s footsteps never stopped. From a wasteland to a museum, Wang Wenman has been working hard since the museum opened to become a new highlight and new business card in Shenzhen.

She often plans the cultural activities of the museum to attract citizens to visit the museum; she works with primary and secondary schools to guide primary and secondary school students to learn Chinese traditional furniture knowledge; she works with various cultural institutions to make the museum a platform for the development of many traditional cultures.

On April 14, 2016, the museum and the Shenzhen Research Institute of Wuhan University reached a strategic cooperation in academic education, planning to open a mahogany specialty and issuing a diploma. This is a groundbreaking event, because so far, there is no precedent for the establishment of mahogany qualifications in universities. The museum hopes that through this initiative, more people will be encouraged to learn the mahogany process, and the mahogany process education will be systematized, and the mahogany process will be incorporated into the current education system in China.

On May 9th, the museum successfully hosted the “China·Guanlan (International) Redwood Summit Forum”. Nearly 200 experts from the Redwoods, such as Yan Anguo, Zhou Jingnan and Cao Jinglou, gathered together to discuss the development direction of the mahogany process. At the forum, representatives of the Redwoods such as Wang Wenman and the representatives of the relevant countries of the Belt and Road signed the International Convention on Guanlan Redwood. This has made the museum a big step forward in promoting the mahogany culture, and the museum is moving from Guanlan to the world!

On June 26th, the museum was awarded the "Shenzhen Science Education Base", together with the major attractions in Shenzhen, to promote the development of science popularization and become the main leg of Shenzhen Science Popularization...

For the company, Wang Wenman's dream is to create a century-old shop with the spirit of artisans; for the museum, she devoted all her enthusiasm to the cause of the mahogany. She is determined to build Asia's largest mahogany furniture museum and show the world the infinite charm of Chinese mahogany culture.
