In 2001, the IEEE802.11a standard was introduced with a bandwidth of 54M. However, due to its high cost and incomplete technology, it has not been widely used in the wireless LAN market. Tsinghua University has only conducted basic research and testing on related products.

In 2003, the introduction of the IEEE802.11g standard was the most ideal choice for Tsinghua University. The 54M bandwidth allows users to transmit not only ordinary data packets, but also multimedia files such as video and audio, laying the foundation for the deep application of wireless LANs; WPA security technology has further developed to provide security assurance for open networks; the backward compatibility feature enables People's previous investment in 802.11b products will not be wasted; low prices, outstanding cost performance and other advantages have made 802.11g products recognized by Tsinghua University.

Tsinghua University decided to use IEEE802.11g products for large-scale applications, so all the newly constructed sixth teaching buildings and ancient buildings used 802.11g standard wireless network solutions.

The entire project used 130 sets of WG602 wireless access points and 150 WG511 wireless network cards.
Because the wireless access point is placed on the ceiling of the classroom, and there is no corresponding power supply facility at this location, so the way of power over Ethernet is adopted to provide WG602 with the required power through Ethernet. Therefore, the US Netgear Ethernet power supply module was selected to supply power to the wireless access point WG602, and a total of 130 sets of Ethernet remote power supply components were used.

Each WG602 wireless AP is connected to the aggregation switch in the wiring closet through Ethernet. The entire project not only covers all floors wirelessly, but also connects to the Tsinghua University campus network through a wired Ethernet aggregation switch. It enables the teachers and students in the new teaching building to share all the information on the campus network and access the Internet through the broadband exit of the campus. In order to ensure the speed of the wireless network, Tsinghua University adopts the method of arranging multiple access points to achieve high-density coverage, so that different data, video and audio files can be transmitted at high speed across the entire network.



Application effect

The 802.11g standard wireless network project of the sixth teaching building of Tsinghua University was completed in October 2003. Through the recent operation, the entire system is stable.
