Nearly 20,000 RMB, the world's first 3D printing pen is available

Recently, Dutch designer Rein van der Mast released his latest work, a titanium 3D printing pen called Spica Virginis. It is reported that this 3D printing pen is printed by 3D Systems' ProX DMP 300 3D printer. The silver Spica Virginia weighs 32 grams, has a length of 150 mm and a diameter of 22 mm.

The 3D printed pen has an amazing 3D printed grid box structure. Van der Mast tells us that in addition to the aesthetics of the design, the pen is technically stiffer than previously seen. Currently, the 3D printing pen is only made in 100 pieces and can be purchased in the Netherlands at a price of 2,490 euros.

As early as 2013, van der Mast released the world's first 3D printing pen. Today, 3D years later, with the advancement of 3D printing technology, this has facilitated the design of more complex mechanical components for van der Mast. The most important of these is a unique 3D printed nib made of titanium, including slits in the nib (patent pending).

Compared to traditional manufacturing, 3D printing can create objects that are difficult to create in traditional manufacturing methods. “I can create very complex ink channels and precisely influence the tip and pen, and how the pen interacts with the user. Of course, this approach can also create very complex and aesthetically pleasing shapes,” explains van der Mast. For various reasons, this titanium 3D printing pen will be delighted by artists and calligraphers with a sense of luxury.

Van der Mast is the founder of SOLIDE, a 3D printing consultancy, and the design and engineering manager of Dutch startup AddiTIve Industries. AddiTIve Industries, a 3D printing company, is particularly well known in the aerospace and automotive sectors. Since the release of his first 3D printing pen in 2013, van der Mast joined the AddiTIve Industries team as a means of expanding his 3D printing skills. Today, he explained, “It’s the 3D printing technology that made Spica Virginis, and back in 2013, it might be made in another way.”

The launch of Spica Virginis demonstrates the growth potential of 3D printing in custom designs. The designer told us, “As technology advances, more machines enter the market, which means that people can use equipment to make smaller objects more precisely.”
