According to CBC reports, Canada's Biota Spring Water claims that its newly launched Montreal-based + 1 bottled water bottle is made of corn plastic polylactic acid.
Biota said that the corn container is a 100% recyclable resource. The bottle can be completely decomposed after 80 days under the conditions of commercial composting, while the traditional plastic bottle can not be biodegraded at all.
The company said that their bottles are certified products that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, a 68% reduction in energy consumption compared to the production of ordinary plastics. In addition, "the new bottles have no petroleum-based products or chemicals that may leach into water from PET bottles."
Carol Zweep, packaging services manager at the Food Technology Center in Guelph, Ontario, said that end-users’ interest in biodegradable packaging products is increasing.
