European and American packaging market (1)

First, the European packaging industry
1, European packaging market
The European packaging industry has a large market and the situation varies from region to region. Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom have an advantage.
The most important factor affecting Western Europe's packaging industry is the environmental and packaging legislation. Germany and most of the Nordic countries have strict requirements on the packaging environment. They prefer glass bottles rather than beverage cans to disposable beverage packaging. In the past decade, the proportion of food sold by large supermarkets controlled by a few companies has been increasing. Therefore, changes in the marketing of food retailers and shorter shelf-life requirements impose higher demands on packaging suppliers.
The value of the European packaging market is US$120 billion, accounting for one-third of the global market. Germany accounts for 22% of the European market. The output value of the packaging industry is 26.9 billion U.S. dollars, Italy 16.9%, and France 16.7%. The four major packaging markets in Europe, including the United Kingdom, accounted for 67% of the total regional market share, while the top six markets accounted for 76.2%. The 7th largest market is Russia, although Eastern Europe alone accounts for 8.3% of the European market.
Germany has earned a reputation in the world for its emphasis on environmental protection. Germany still uses glass packaging differently for all packaging, while disposable PET bottles are less commonly used. Germany was the first country in Europe to establish legislation on packaging waste, and the regulations were implemented in 1991 with the aim of stimulating the recycling and recycling of packaging materials.
The Italian packaging industry made great efforts to develop new technologies from 1990 to 2000. For example, plastic packaging holds a high share in the use of packaging materials.
In the UK's packaging industry, efforts were made to develop new technologies from 1990 to 2000. For example, plastic packaging holds a high share in the use of packaging materials.
At the same time, Eastern Europe's packaging industry has a lot of opportunities. There has been a marked improvement in this area, but imported packaging materials are still very important in meeting the demand for packaging in the region.
Taking the Russian beverage industry as an example, it has established a large number of canning plants and is continuing to build, which will generate a large demand for beverage cans. The Swedish PLM company is Russia's leading supplier of beverage cans. It works closely with major consumers and established a X-funded beverage can manufacturing plant in Moscow. PLM has supplied a large number of soft drink cans to Russian brewers and soft drink traders, and signed a contract for Russian Coca-Cola canning, the largest beverage manufacturer in Russia.
2. European tinplate prices rise
Many European major tinplate manufacturers have announced that they will raise the price of tinplate since January 1 this year. Rasselstein Hoesch and Usinor Packaging have already announced a price increase of at least 5% in the Nordic market. Meanwhile, Spain's tinplate maker Aceralia stated that the company will increase its price by 11%. More than %, Corus, the largest European manufacturer of tinplate, also said that it would raise the price of tinplate, but the increase has not been determined. The price increase for Nordic, Southern and Eastern European countries, Patrick Baudon, business manager of Usinor Packaging, said that there are about two figures in southern Europe, especially in Spain and Italy. The price in Eastern Europe is lower than that in Northern Europe; as for France and other Nordic countries, Compared with 1999, Usinor will raise the price by more than 5%. In 2000, the price was not revised. Rasselstein Hoesch and Usinor Packaging also plan to adopt a regional market pricing strategy that will bring substantially higher prices to South and Eastern Europe. Ignacia Cuesta, Aceralia's sales manager for tinplate, said that in the past few years, Aceralia's tinplate has actually squeezed its profits so tightly that earnings could not be maintained and price increases are inevitable.
3. Significantly increased collection of PET bottles in Europe
In the continuous expansion of the PET bottle market, the collection and recycling of PET bottles has attracted the attention of European countries. At present, the used PET bottle collection volume in Europe is about 200 Kt/a, accounting for 14% of the consumption. In 2004, it will reach 500 Kt/a, accounting for 24%, and in 2008 it will reach 700 Kt/a, accounting for 27%.
The collection and recycling of PET bottles in European countries is quite uneven. Italy has the largest collection volume. Sweden and Switzerland have high collection rates of 70-80%. Both countries have national PET bottle recycling systems, while Spain and the United Kingdom have the highest recycling rates. Less than 10%. German packaging plastic recycling work is more advanced, but due to historical reasons, PET bottles consume less. It is expected that the market conditions will be more favorable for the recycling of PET (RPET) in the coming years, the potential demand for transparent RPET will exceed supply, and the development of plastic automatic sorting process will increase the possibility of using RPET in the market, but the demand for colored RPET is still small. At present, the recycling capacity of PET bottles in 23 countries in Europe is 189Kt/a. In the future, 10-15 new production lines will be added with 175Kt/a capacity, which meets the requirements for recycling volume in 2004.
4, paper packaging favored in Europe
With the gradual strengthening of environmental policies in Europe, paper materials that replace plastic materials have attracted much attention in the food packaging materials market.
In the autumn of 1999, a new type of paper-wrapped cereals appeared in the breakfast market in Norway. This type of food packaging does not use plastic film-made inner bags at all. Instead, it directly uses paper packages that can protect the contents. Regal Molle uses a moisture-resistant and high-barrier oxygen coated paper as an outer packaging material, which can effectively extend the storage time from manufacturing to consumption. This is a simple example of the success of cereal packaging. (To be continued)
