Therefore, it is urgent and important for printing companies and manufacturers to master the types, applications, and printing of bar codes.

First, the basic knowledge of bar codes

The earliest bar code originated in the 1920s and was invented by an inventor named John Kermode. The design at that time was very simple. A "bar" was used to represent the number "1". The two "bars" represent the numbers. "2" and so on. Since then, with the rapid development of electronic technology and the continuous improvement and improvement of scientists, bar code technology has been applied to every field of life, making our life easier and more convenient.

What is a barcode? A bar code is a set of bars and blank symbols arranged according to a certain coding rule to represent certain characters, numbers and symbols. These bars and spaces can be combined in various ways to form different graphic symbols for different applications. The bar code system is an automatic identification system composed of bar code symbol design, production and scanning and reading. China joined the International EAN Coding Association in 1991 and issued the national standard for bar codes in the same year.

Currently used in carton printing

The main code system is:

1. Code39 barcode: This is a non-continuous bar code with bar and space indicating information, which can represent the numbers 0-9, letters AZ, and a, space, etc. 43 characters, its advantage is that the code length is not limited, can support the text Digital, but it has a low coding density and space, and is mainly used in the automation of the automotive industry, industry, books, and bills (Figure 1).

2. Code25 barcode: It is a non-continuous bar code that only shows information. The interval between bars and bars does not indicate information. It only supports digital data and is generally used for storage, product identification, packaging identification, etc. (Figure 2).

3, Codebar (Codebar) Barcode: is a bar, space is a non-continuous, variable length, bidirectional self-checking information bar code, can represent the number 0-91 letters AZ and -, ten and other special characters. Mainly used for libraries, blood banks, etc., with a smaller range of applications (Figure 3).

4. EAN bar code: It is an international universal bar code developed by the International Association of Object Codes and can only represent digital data. The most commonly used are EAN8 and EAN13 barcodes. It is mainly used for product identification, applied to the entire circulation industry, and has the widest scope of circulation. Its advantage is that each product has only a unique digital code and the code is not repeated. The disadvantage is that the code size is fixed and only digital data is supported (see Figure 4).

5. EAN 128 Barcode: A special bar code symbol jointly developed by EAN International and UCC. It is a continuous type, non-fixed-length, meaningful high-density code, used to represent production date, batch number, quantity, specifications, shelf life, receiving location, and more product information (Figure 5).
