Japan’s Asahi Kasei recently announced that it has developed a polyethylene process that can produce molecular weights in excess of 10 million, without producing byproducts such as gels. At present, the company filed a patent application for its key technical points.
In general, as the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, the by-product gels that are derived will also increase accordingly, which has become a bottleneck for the manufacture of ultrahigh molecular weight PE. At present, the maximum molecular weight of PE products is only about 400-500 million. Asahi Kasei uses the catalyst technology and polymerization technology owned by the company to successfully produce high-density polyethylene that is more than twice the molecular weight of the past through the “slurry†method of so-called metallocene catalysts.
